The Mushroom Maidens
Maddie was a member of the mushroom maiden competition team. They travel all over the Mushroom Meadow dancing the best dances the meadow had ever seen. She had a big house filled with nice things, that made people think she was stuck up and rude. But she was just misunderstood. If you ask the sprouts in her fifth grade class, they would say they didn’t know her or she thinks she’s so good with her big house and fancy dresses.
The mushroom maidens wear their hair in a bun on the top of their head. A beautiful hat, that’s mushroom shaped, sat on the top of their head. The minis had pretty mushroom dresses that caved over the thighs on their legs. The older girls had the same dresses as the minis. The older girls also had mushroom parasols and thin spider webs with ice dew drops dangling off the parasol.
The older girls were at the back of the stage behind the littler ones. The mushroom maidens were the loveliest, prettiest, and fastest show in the Mushroom Meadow.
“Girls, we are having soil and carbon dioxide soup for dinner tonight, you need your carbon dioxide to get better,” Mrs. Mushroom told Maddie and her sister Mary.
“ Mom do you want me to set the table?” Milly asked
“Sure, we need five plates because Mrs. Grunge is coming over for dinner tonight.”
The youngest in the family was Milly. She was a peppy little girl who enjoyed doing things with their neighbor. Rosie was old but Milly didn’t care at all.
“Mom why Mrs. Grunge? Why not Rosie or Mrs. Petunia, we all like her,” Milly pleaded.
“We’re having Mrs. Grunge over because she had us over last week.”
“Milly, just set the table and go up stairs to take your bath, I’ll be cooking dinner.”
After dinner Maddie raced up the stairs as fast as her dainty legs would let her go, her dress beating against her legs. She entered her room gasping for breath. Looking at the mushroom canopy over her her bed made her think about how much she wanted her parasol, because the mushroom canopy looked like the parasols the older girls had but with longer spider webs.
Plopping down on her bed with a sigh she thought to herself,“I need my parasol, all I want is to get it, I want it so bad I need to get better, I can get better, I will get better. Mother always said that I will get it if I want it more but I want it as much as it can be wanted.” Soon she fell asleep.
In the morning, the sun was shining so bright that you would get blinded if you looked at it. This was good for all the plants because sunlight gets collected for the plant’s leaves. At breakfast Maddie and Mary had eggs sunnieside up.
“Eat up, eat up, girls you need that energy from the sunlight.”
As they walked up the stone path to the Open Root auditorium, their neighbor Rosie was waking to the auditorium two. Rosie was old because her thorns made hungry animals stay away and not eat her. They left walking down the dirt path to the Open Root auditorium.
“Go, go girls go up stage,” Mrs. Mushroom told Maddie and Mary.
In the middle of the dance as the mushroom maidens were gliding across the stage. Suddenly a parasol appeared in Maddie’s hand the flowers stood and cheered. At the end of the show all the dancers got a trophy they all gave it to Maddie.
After all the dance was over Maddie, Mary, Milly, and Mrs. Mushroom went out to Margo’s Milkshake Topping Bar.
