Miss Kippy went out today and examined the clouds hanging above Lee Elementary school. She paid close attention to the shape of the clouds and tried to fill up the frame with clouds so that Miss Pemby had a great example to sketch from. When Miss Kippy takes photographs she tries to create strong compositions. The reason she wants a strong composition is because if her photograph is strong compositionally the viewer will spend more time examining her photograph. Below are two photographs one is a strong composition and the other is a weak composition. Can you tell why the left photo is stronger than the right? Miss Pemby used Miss Kippy's strong photograph of the clouds to sketch from. Miss Pemby used a process called reduction to sketch. She started by lightly sketching the shape of the cloud. She then used her pencil at an angle to shade around the outline she drew to create those darker values. After she shaded her page fully she went back in with her eraser and created those fluffy looking clouds. Compare Miss Pemby's sketch to Miss Kippy's photo what similarities and differences do you see?
